ART IN THE VERONESE CHURCHES

ART IN THE VERONESE CHURCHESFor anyone who truly loves art and history the 4 Historical Churches in Verona offer an overview as regards artistic continuity and the purity of their expressive heights that is truly rare in Italy. A cultural journey covering a thousand years –the time that separates the very first IVth century cathedrals from Tiziano’s “Assunta” in the Duomo (1530). The Basilica of San Zeno is a prototype of Romanic art known throughout the world. It was rebuilt after the earthquake in 1117 over the IV-Vth century core, and houses the celebrated triptych by Andrea Mantegna (1457-59). The Church of San Fermo, consisting of a Romanic lower church with the highly unusual feature of four aisles, while built above, on a higher level is the upper church dating from the Gothic era with its superb wooden ceiling and XIVth and XVth century frescos including one by Pisanello. The Basilica of Sant’Anastasia is a Gothic church that was built between 1290 and 1481 and contains a wealth of valuable works, amongst which the world-renowned “Saint George and the Princess” stands out, together with the famous fresco by Altichiero. Finally the Duomo, rebuilt over early Christian foundations and first consecrated in 1187. Its façade has Romanic origins, the double porch is by Nicolò (1138) and in the interior we can find Sanmicheli’s choir stalls as well as Tiziano’s “L’Assunta” (1530).
